| Chroma refers to the level of intensity or saturation a colour has in relation to the grey scale. The higher the chroma figure, the more intense or saturated the colour is. This is also sometimes referred to as 'apparent' strength. |

On the CIELab diagram, colours become progressively brighter or more saturated as you move away from the central, neutral axis to the outside edge of the circle, and lighter as you move up the central lightness axis. This is illustrated opposite: |

The chroma is measured
from 0 at the central axis, towards the outside of the circle, and is
therefore represented as a series of concentric rings of increasing
chroma. |
