| In order to view a coloured object three things are required: an observer (human eye or spectrophotomer), an object and a light source which can be natural or artificial light. Take away any one of these and we are unable to define a colour. |
| Objects display colours by a combination of reflecting and absorbing the light which falls upon them. | |

White light (a combination of red, blue and green wavelengths) falls on the object. The green and blue are absorbed, the red is reflected, so the object appears red. |
